Nearly 7,000 shooting competitors from around the world will gather in Sparta, Illinois, beginning today to August 16, to compete for top prizes during the 2008 Grand American World Trapshooting Championships.

The event will take place at the World Shooting & Recreational Complex, which houses 120 trap fields that stretch over three miles.

Participants will have a chance to get an early start on the competition during preliminary week, August 6 to 10, where they will compete in singles and doubles events, such as the Winchester Super 500, the Browning Super 500 and the White Flyer 500 Handicap.

“The Grand is in a league of its own,” said Greg Kosteck, director of marketing for Winchester Ammunition, a major sponsor of the event. “There are numerous great trap shooting competitions around the world, but this event is literally where the best of the best come to compete.”

The National Rifle Association will award two boxes of commemorative Winchester Ammunition AA shells to each person who becomes a new NRA member or renews their membership.
