Women’s Air Rifle Kicks off Shooting Competition at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing

BEIJING, China (August 8, 2008) – The shooting competition at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China will kick off Saturday at the Beijing ShootingRange Hall/Beijing Shooting Range Clay Target Field (CTF) with the Women’s 10m Air Rifle, Men’s Trap and Men’s 10m Air Pistol events.

Women’s Air Rifle is the first event at the 2008 Olympic Games in which medals will be awarded. Emily Caruso (Fairfield, Conn.), a 2004 Olympian, and Jamie Beyerle (Lebanon, Pa.) will have a chance to earn two of the first three spots on the podium at the Beijing Games.

In shotgun, Men’s Trap will begin on Saturday with the first 75 targets. Bret Erickson (Bennington, Neb.), 47, will be representing the U.S. on his fourth U.S. Olympic team and is looking to claim his first Olympic medal. Dominic Grazioli (San Antonio, Texas), the shooting team captain and a Major in the U.S. Air Force, was an alternate to the 1996 Olympic team and earned his first berth to U.S. Olympic Team in 2008. The Men’s Trap final event will conclude on Sunday, August 10 with the last 50 targets and the final.

The Men’s 10m Air Pistol qualification and final will be held on Saturday with 2004 Olympian Jason Turner (Rochester, N.Y.), a 2007 Pan American Games double gold medalist vying for his first Olympic medal. Brian Beaman (Selby, S.D.) will be looking to earn a spot on the podium at his first Olympic Games appearance.
