This is our pick as a personal-defense, home-defense, and tactical pistol. The slightly longer Springfield barrel developed a few more fps. There were no failures to feed, chamber, fire or eject. Our sole complaint was loading the magazines to capacity.

A DM Bullard holster provided the holster example for this test. The balance of speed and retention was ideal.
The XD(M) is a modern polymer frame handgun with good features.
Disassembly is simple enough with the XD(M) 9mm.
The XD(M) has features we like in a carry gun, such as the grip-safety design.
We liked the XD(M) grip treatment. Fired offhand, the 9mm round is controllable and is actually a joy to fire in pistols of thirty ounces or more.
