Cartridge length largely determines grip-frame size. From left: 9mm, .45 ACP and 45 GAP rounds. The first version of the MP we saw was chambered for 45 GAP, allowing the grip frame to be reduced front to back from standard dimensions for .45 ACP.
We measured the EMP magazines to be about 0.115 inches smaller front to back that a comparable .45 ACP magazine. When the GAP project was postponed, adapting the gun to 9mm was a natural. A .40 S&W model is in the future. The stainless steel Mec-Gar magazines held nine rounds.
Springfield beveled all four sides of the magazine well, creating a somewhat oval shape when compared to typical single-stack pistols. We think this helped us load magazines slightly faster.
