GUN TESTS GRADE: A
Classic lines, drop-box magazine, and lots of power. Dakota's 76 African got our full attention, on and off the range. This was a fine-performing and fully reliable rifle, the only one of this test that actually worked, and worked to perfection.

Yep, that's a lot of money for a rifle. In fact, with the $150 Talley rings and bases on this rifle, its total cost came to $5,945. But Dakota, we believe, has wisely chosen what we'll call the middle ground. You can buy relatively inexpensive rifles in this caliber, or you can buy very expensive ones, like John Rigby's, for well into five figures. But Dakota is the only company building rifles that cost less than a whole lot of money, but more than a little bit of money. We think Dakota seems to have the right idea. So what do you get for your six grand?
Note the button for the magazine floorplate is out of the way of a recoiling finger. The box held four cartridges, designed to feed from the magazine.
The perfect checkering wrapped around the forend. It is rare to see such crisp and clean work.
Here's a sample of the inletting, as seen on the front magazine tang. The line between metal and wood is mighty thin, and looked like this everywhere except behind the main tang, which was relieved properly for recoil protection.
