Remove the 3-inch-long cylinder bored to house the .450 inch diameter .444 Marlin case and suddenly you've got plenty of negative space.
When the shooter's finger is on the trigger, the transfer bar is in position to take a hit from the hammer face and transfer the energy to the firing pin.
With the finger off the trigger, the hammer misses the firing pin by the thickness of the transfer bar.
