Gun Report

Cabela's Traditional Hawken .54 Cal. Flintlock

Read Gun Tests Rating and Recommendation

Excellent materials, fine workmanship, and outstanding performance marked Cabela's Traditional Hawken as a Best Buy. We could only object slightly to the shiny brass furniture, and complain a bit about the lack of ramrod retention, but this rifle was an excellent one, well worth its modest cost. We particularly liked the rear sight, plus the quality of the walnut and its excellent inletting and finishing.

The lock, shared by the Lyman, utilized coil springs for sear and cock. The pan spring retained the traditional look of early flinters. Note the high quality of the wood.
The Traditional Hawken had a fully click-stop-adjustable rear sight that retained a very useful and appropriate notch. The sight picture was a bead in the bottom of a wideangle vee.
