Lyman Great Plains Rifle .54 Flintlock

Read Gun Tests Rating and Recommendation

Looking like it just left Jake Hawken's shop, the Lyman Great Plains rifle was much closer in appearance and finish to a real mountain rifle than any so-called modern Hawken. Ironwork wasmatte blued, and the fine walnut was finished in dark oil. This rifle had a slower twist rate than the Traditional Hawken, which worked better with maximum round-ball loads. Workmanship andparts quality were excellent throughout, and this was our first choice for a serious flint rifle.

Same lock as on the Traditional Hawken, here it was a bit smoother. Trigger guard shape is close to authentic original Hawken. After our mods to the lockwork, this -- and the other two rifles as well -- were perfectly reliable during our limited testing. We liked the coil springs of these locks.
Clean woodwork and fine inletting of the Lyman were great draws. The barrel here had a hook at the back, and two cross pins.
This simple fixed sight was found to give center hits at 50 yards with the Lyman. The adjustable sight in the box did not work with our round-ball loads.
All ready to go to work, the Lyman was as efficient as it looked. Note the small area struck by the properly adjusted flint. This proved to be enough to get a good spark, but only a redesign of the lock could lengthen the scraped surface.
