With the slide locked back, the shooter disassembles the gun by simply rotating the release to remove the top end (top arrow). The recoil spring (bottom arrow) is multi-filament.
The Sig P220's slide release takes precedence over other controls. Reason: Once the shooter has begun firing, should the gun lock back empty, the weak hand can retrieve and load the spare magazine. Once inserted, releasing the slide need not wait until the left hand is in position.
