Despite the Savage’s deep bluing and attractive checkered stock, we found that this Savage did not shoot as well with its preferred ammunition as did the Henry or the Ruger. That, combined with the magazine, left us awarding the Savage what we feel is a fair-minded and well-supported ‘B.’

The Savage had excellent wood-to-metal fit, but its magazine, seen protruding here, was a drawback to our testers.
The Savage impressed us out of the box as well with an extremely attractive walnut stock, high-luster bluing, and an Accu-Trigger that broke clean at just over 3 pounds.
