The “twirling” ridges on the Steyr barrel were remnants of the hammer-forge process. Steyr claims these ridges aid in cooling. Fully floated, there was a sizable gap between the barrel and fore end.
Rotating the safety rearward past the stop for safety-on revealed a button. Pressing the button released the bolt.
The Steyr butt pad was seated behind two removable spacers. The pad itself offered little cushion to the touch. But due to the synthetic stock and the pad’s generous surface area, felt recoil was lowered significantly.
