Gun Report

Sig Sauer P290RS-9-BSS 9mm Para, $758

Read Gun Tests Rating and Recommendation

This gun was top-heavy whether loaded or not. We didn't care for the grip angle nor the small size of the grip, but you might like it. The trigger pull was long and heavy, but because of the shape of the trigger, it was manageable. That bow inside the trigger guard helped keep us from getting pinched. With a pull of 8.8 pounds, the gun really didn't need an added safety lever. We had trouble with the pull until we used just the tip of our finger. We had a big problem with its takedown.

We had to use a padded vise and both hands to pull the slide and then force out the cross pin. This is no way to arrange takedown of a gun, we thought. It means the owner will leave maintenance until later. If the gun is hard to take apart, it won't be properly maintained, and that can lead to many problems.
Here's the Sig with its 8-shot mag in place. We could then get our whole hand on the grip. However, we could get all our fingers onto the Ruger (right) because of its extended finger rest on the mag. We liked Ruger's options a lot better than those of the Sig. This Sig's long mag makes pocket concealment a problem, in our opinion.
Getting the gun to this condition tried our patience. However, the guts of the gun were well made, and it worked perfectly. That's the 6-round magazine shown, which we used for all our accuracy testing. There's an 8-shot one that made the grip tolerable, but lots bigger.
