The XDM40 3.8 Compact came with an 11-round magazine and a 16-round magazine. Three extension collars for the longer magazine were supplied to match the different size backstraps. The Pearce base pad (arrow) was our choice to provide an extra finger groove with the short mag.
Changes from the XD to the XDM include a 3-slot Picatinny accessory rail, enhanced cocking serrations and a thin-profile slide. A separate cut for the slide latch was unnecessary and takedown did not require pressing the trigger.
With the Pearce grip basepad and Number III (large) backstrap in place, the short-gripped compact completely filled our hands. Note the grip safety, bottom arrow, and indentation at the top of the grip panel, top arrow. Magazine-release buttons were on both sides.
The low-mount rear sight was drift adjustable only but channeled light to the rear of the slide for maximum sightradius. The short black line leading from the ejection port was the loaded-chamber indicator. Note the abundance of rear cocking serrations.
