The 557's refined looks belied its rugged durability, but its heavier weight did not seem to tame recoil. May only need a more effective buttpad.

The CZ 557 Short Action rifle offered 19mm dovetails designed to fit CZ's proprietary rings. The dedicated rearward ring sported a recoil lug, assuring that it won't be moving under recoil. The top loop of each ring showed a vertical score line to make sure they were mounted the right way. The slotted crossbolts were plenty secure, but testers worried about marring the tiny ring screws with a flat-head screwdriver. Thankfully, the slots were unusually deep. By using a thin-blade screwdriver, there was little danger of the blade skipping across the screw head.
The CZ 557's magazine release was located inside the front of the trigger guard.
The CZ 557 action was built for maximum strength. Rather than cut a hole in the side of the action to mount a bolt release, CZ provided a small lever, almost hidden by the bolt itself (left arrow). At right is the safety knob.
