Downrange: May 2013

It would be funny, if it weren’t so pathetic. The overlords who seek to disarm us just don’t know anything about guns, which makes them both arrogant and dangerous. Three recent eyebrow-raising examples:

Mike Bloomberg spent $12 million on attack ads designed to force U.S. senators to vote for national gun-control laws that will supposedly save lives. However, the New York mayor’s commercials that ran in 13 states showcase irresponsible gun handling. Mr. Bloomberg’s organization, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, produced two ads featuring a man holding a shotgun, wearing plaid flannel with a camouflage cap and sitting on the tailgate of a pickup truck. While a child swings on a tire in the background, the man says, “I support comprehensive background checks so criminals and the dangerously mentally ill can’t buy guns.”

Our Team Said: The man violates at least three gun-safety rules taught by the National Rifle Association: Always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction. Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to shoot. Keep the gun action open when you’re off the range.

NY Governor Andrew Cuomo said the ban on high-capacity ammunition “clips” passed as part of the New York Safe Act back in January needs to be reworked. Under the new law, individuals cannot sell or possess magazines that carry more than seven rounds. Problem: “There is no such thing as a seven-bullet magazine. That doesn’t exist,” Cuomo said. “So you really have no practical option.” The governor confirmed that a correction to the law would allow ownership of 10-bullet clips [sic], but gun owners could only fill them with up to seven bullets.

Our Team Said: A quick search on CheaperThanDirt.com turned up several 7-round single-stack 1911 magazines — are there no interwebz in NY? Also, is understanding the difference between a magazine and clip really that hard? No, it’s not. And only loading seven rounds? OMG.

Rep. Diana DeGette (D-CO) gave both Bloomberg and Cuomo a run for the money this week. Rep. DeGette is the lead sponsor of the Democrat’s bill banning high-capacity ammunition magazines, as she proudly proclaimed at a Denver Post forum on gun control recently. DeGette was asked how limiting the size of magazines would reduce gun violence. She said, “I will tell you these are ammunition, they’re bullets, so the people who have those know they’re going to shoot them, so if you ban them in the future, the number of these high capacity magazines is going to decrease dramatically over time because the bullets will have been shot and there won’t be any more available.”

Our Team Said: The stupid is strong in this one. The person who is the lead sponsor of a ban bill in the U. S. House of Representatives doesn’t understand that a magazine simply holds the bullets, and that magazines can be reloaded with more bullets. And she has the power to make laws that affect us all. GT
