Indiana gunowners are celebrating the defeat of the most anti-gun Republican in the U.S. Senate, Indiana Sen. Dick Lugar. The NRA, Gun Owners of America, and other national, state, and local gun-rights groups endorsed the challenger, Richard Mourdock, early this year and strongly backed Mourdock’s campaign ever since.

Mourdock, who is Indiana’s current state treasurer, is a strong Second Amendment supporter and understands that gun ownership is a fundamental, individual liberty that must be safeguarded in a free society.

Lugar established himself as the most anti-gun Republican in the U.S. Senate by supporting waiting periods for handgun purchases, wanting a ban on many semi-automatic firearms, and supporting all of President Obama’s radical anti-gun judicial nominees. Topping the list, though, was the fact that Lugar “voted to confirm both Elena Kagan, and Sonya Sotomayor to the Supreme Court, one of only four Republican Senators to vote for both,” an NRA ad said. The narrator of that NRA television spot noted that Lugar has “become the only Republican candidate in Indiana with an ‘F’ rating from the NRA.”

Little-known fact. Can a person prohibited by law from possessing a firearm acquire and use a blackpowder muzzleloading firearm? Answer from BATFE: “Federal law does not prohibit these persons from possessing or receiving an antique firearm. The term ‘antique firearm’ means any firearm (including any firearm with a matchlock, flintlock, percussion cap, or similar type of ignition system) manufactured in or before 1898.”

We missed this the first go-round. The Armed Citizen Alliance (ACA) was actually created in late 2011, and we must have snored through its startup. Recently, though, the membership group has gathered a number of new industry commitments and is scheduled to open its member-forum section this month. In May, Taurus Int’l, Rock River Arms, Sig Sauer, and Mossberg joined ACA as industry sponsors.

ACA’s goal is to provide an avenue for ordinary citizens to practice, train, and become familiar with the use of concealed-carry handguns and other personal-defense firearms in an organized, recreational context that simulates real-world situations. Steve Hornady of Hornady Ammunition is chairman of the board of directors. Professional shooter Todd Jarrett is the group’s president. Other functionaries involved in ACA’s Advisory Council include a mixture of industry executives and shooter advisers whose judgment we trust. ACA looks like it will provide entry into the sport and culture that other groups don’t supply.
