The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

todd woodard

Gun legislation is swinging wildly from state to state. Some states are seeking to restrict or ban certain classes of firearms; others are expanding gun-ownership rights in ways we wouldn’t have thought possible just a few years ago. And the Supremes have taken up a 2nd Amendment case that has the possibility of striking down a gun ban — whodathunkit? Here’s a roundup of some of the legal efforts that qualify as The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly (hat tip to director Sergio Leone).

The Good:

  • Constitutional Carry legislation has passed in Oklahoma;
  • According to the New Mexico Sheriffs’ Association, 29 counties are working to become Second Amendment Sanctuary counties in which any new restrictive statewide gun rules won’t be enforced;
  • The Supreme Court will review a New York City gun law that limits residents from transporting their guns outside their homes, the first Second Amendment case in nearly a decade.

The Bad:

  • U.S. House Democrats may have already passed a measure that mandates federal background checks on all gun sales, including private transactions;
  • House Democrats have also scheduled a vote on legislation to extend the deadline for federal background checks from three business days to as many as 20.

The Ugly:

  • Look no further than California for a cornucopia of horrible anti-gun laws under consideration, including Assembly Bill 18, which would impose an excise tax on handguns and semi-automatic firearms;
  • Assembly Bill 879, which would require precursor firearms parts (barrels, ammunition feedings devices and upper receivers) to be sold/transferred through a licensed precursor parts dealer in a similar process to the new laws regarding ammunition purchases; and
  • Assembly Bill 1602, which would prohibit an insurer from either selling or advertising liability coverage for bodily injury or property damage resulting from the insured’s discharge of a personal firearm.

And take note of this wisdom from the movie, spoken by Blondie (Clint Eastwood): You see, in this world there’s two kinds of people, my friend: Those with loaded guns and those who dig. You dig.

Hello, I read this post and associated comments with interest. However, I'm surprised you didn't mention the democratic republic of Massachusetts. There will be a public hearing on 28-August to discuss potential anti-firearms bills. A few of the things to be discussed:

Restriction allowing purchase of only One gun a month;
Banning all standard magazines;
Mandating annual inspections of guns by local law enforcement;
Mandatory live fire training for licensing;
All guns offered for sale must be photographed and test fired by the state crime lab;
Requiring liability insurance for all gun owners;
Who knows what will and will not make it to the floor for further debate but one thing is clear - there are more restrictions coming. Pretty soon you won't be able to own a squirt gun in MA.

To my fellow Democrat New Yorker: You already know how over restrictive the gun laws are in NYS and especially NYC, which prevents the average citizen from possessing handguns, even in one's home for self protection, without a license. It is discriminatory in my view, to be charged exorbitant application fees , extremely long back round checks which is intentionally done to discourage new applicants from applying . It is high time that the Supreme Court through out the NYC ordinance and the old Sullivan Law that discriminated against Italian Americans when it was enacted over 100 years ago. That same mindset exists today but includes just about every body. Do not be fooled by your Democrat colleagues, as their agenda will accomplish one thing; ban most guns , as they already have in NYC, so the criminals can keep their guns. I am sure that element will go to a gun shop, get a back round check, and register their guns.
C' mon, wake up!

What is wrong with this picture? The U.S. has one of the strongest firearm ownership in the world but, at most of the mass shootings, only one person had a firearm, the bad guy. In the cases where another person or persons were armed and confronted the terrorist, the results were much better. The lesson is obvious.

It is neither that we have too few or too many firearms. The problem is that they are not where they are needed. Some religious leaders have asked members of the congregation to carry concealed handguns in church or in the temple. Return fire already stopped on terrorist in Florida. Nothing deters a shooter more than return fire, especially hits.

Referencing manwinkler's comment that he has no problem with background checks and waiting periods, then I must presume for consistency's sake that he has no problem applying these same rules to the 1st Amendment.

The Saul Alinsky acolytes have won the battle for the hearts and minds of most in the BIG CITIES of America. Note that our Founders were so wary of Group Think in the Major Metropolitan that they Created the Electoral College to make sure these areas could NEVER determine what has become the LEADER of the Free World . Open FREE discussion being limited or suppressed is the arena of Google & Facebook. These youngsters have been thoroughly Indoctrinated in Saul Alinsky's methods and since academia has abandoned all efforts to educate our Youth to "Learn how to Learn" and instead believe MAN is now Omnipotent and can actually CONTROL thier Gender and the Climate we as a Society are the Losers. Single Issue Americans are as abhorrent as HYPHENATED Americans. I LOVE my guns and have an archive of MOST of the articles published for future reference but I do not have my head so far up my anal canal that the hemorrhoids interfere with cognitive thinking. For Progressive ONLY; I can Walk and Chew Gum at the same time.

We're supposed to feel confident that the Government Data Base If correct and ALL States
And Government Agencies Are reporting as required by law? ITHINK NOT.....The Active Shooter Incident in Sutherland Springs Church, the Shooter was convicted by Air Force Court Martial And was not allowed by state or federal statue to posses firearms yet The Air Force failed to report it and he passed the background check, so adding more time and another layer of Govt minions is gonna help.

I am a democrat, I shoot (I have 12 gauge Mossberg and a 9mm KelTec), live in NY, and really do not see a problem with
A. background checks on all purchases , and
B. making those thorough, even if they take 7 days (or twenty, if needed).
It makes me uncomfortable to hear others automatically decry my as unpatriotic, traitorous, and worse, just because I have a different opinion.

When the firearm was first inroduced people were horrified and thus the beginning of antigunners. Hasn't changed much over the years. We will have to fight to keep are guns and there will be much bloodshed.

Can't wait till the NYC gun ordinance is nullified by the Supreme Court. It is past outrageous that local governments have gotten away with their extreme violations of our Second Amendment rights. They should be ordered to pay monetary damages as discriminating against the people in their gun application process as being both totally unreasonable as well as discriminatory. One has to be blind in not seeing how outrageous this practice has long gone on!

James K... What good are gun tests if guns are banned? Maybe you should turn them in-your firearms, I mean. It's obvious you turned in a pair of something you did not need long ago.

I subscribed to Gun-Tests because I thought that's all I would see- gun test results.
If I wanted to read political hyperbole I'd stick with the other firearm mags.
Thought you guys were different. Guess not.

I.ve said it before, many times, If California Republicans would get off their dead as7e7 and get out and vote the gun grabbers in the state wouldn't have a chance. We can only blame ourselves for some of this.

Also in the "GOOD" column -- in CA, Federal District Judge Benitez declared the CA law banning standard-capacity magazines (over 10 rounds) that was part of Prop 63 in 2016 to be UNCONSTITUTIONAL on 2nd Amendment grounds. CA firearm owners have SWAMPED online retailers, buying standard-capacity magazine in bulk.

One small step ... but it's a start.

Here we three types of people in the United States....Those who want the Government to take care of everything(DemoRats), while removing your Rights..Those who are fence sitters. And those who salute the Flag, love their Country/Constitution/Bill of Rights, & sitting on est 7 trillion rounds of ammunition.... The choice is ours.

With tongue in cheek maybe Pres. Trump should build a wall that runs from Mexico all the way north to Washington State. Keep all the socialists and illegals on the Calif. side. Then if that doesn`t work, collapse the San Andreas Fault into the sea. The country would have new beach property to sell and the WALL might still be there to keep the sharks out!

Leave it to California Dems. What they need is to have the pants scared off them with a criminal element in their house while it takes the sheriff an hour and a half to be able to get forces to them to help. After all the criminals don't buy handguns legally if they buy one at all. Most times they steal them!
