The manual thumb safety is located on the 9 o’clock to 12 o’clock arc of the frame. With the hammer back and safety off, the Rough Rider is ready to fire.
The cylinders of both the Ruger (right) and Heritage .17 HMR revolvers featured recessed chambers. The cases stayed put during ignition and rotation, avoiding the type of cylinder drag we encountered with their double-action cousins.
The front sight not only cut a tall, useful profile but also offered the red glow from a light-gathering filament.
