Winchester Model 70 .300 WSM

The matte stainless metalwork contrasted nicely with the black polymer stock of the .300 WSM. Workmanship was very good throughout. We'd have liked a softer recoil pad. The Model 70 was a clean, reliable, solid rifle. Not much to go wrong here. But we wonder if the niche the cartridge is designed to fill actually needs filling.

We liked the checkered bolt knob, solid three-position safety, smoothness of the action, and the overall look and performance of this rifle. The checkering worked well enough.
The controlled-feed extractor closed over chambered rounds easily, permitting 3+1 operation. Note the jeweling on the bolt body and the beveled fronts of the lugs, indicating a cone-shaped breech, just like in early Model 70s.
