Gun Report

Springfield Armory Lwt. Champion Operator PX9115LP 45 ACP

Read Gun Tests Rating and Recommendation

Although the Springfield LW Champion Operator was attractive with its checkered cocobolo grips and matte-black “Armory Kote” finish, we found it to be stiff and a bit rough. The safety could not be easily operated by the shooter’s thumb. The light rail was a clever touch if you need a light on your gun. The Champion Operator had decent accuracy, too, plus night sights and a decent trigger.

We did not like the takedown procedure even slightly, though the innards of the gun were very well made. Note the feed ramp integral with the back of the barrel. Some smoothing was needed, we felt, and that would help the gun a bit, but you’re stuck with that odd disassembly, which was made more difficult by the extended dust cover with its integral rail.
The gun comes with these plastic holsters. The gun snaps securely into the belt-looped holster on the left, which is adjustable for tension. The other item holds two spare magazines, and is also adjustable for tension. We found it difficult to get the gun out even after adjusting the tension, but at least you have a way to carry the gun. Maybe it will get easier with some wear. Note that the holster also has a rail on which you can carry your light.
