ArmaLite AR-24 Pistol Compact 24K-13 9mm Luger, $550

Great gun -- shot accurately and to point of aim at 15 yards. Comfortable to hold and fire. Double-stack grip width a problem for small-handed shooters. Heavy for carry, in our opinion.

Getting the gun to this point is pretty easy: line up two marks, remove the slide-stop pin, push the slide off the frame. Slide and frame are CNC-machined from ordnance alloy steel. Barrel rifling is broached rather than button rifled. The hammer is a Commander-style shape with a rounded spur. The exterior finish showed minor wear marks in the epoxy topcoat. The matte-black (or dark grey) reduced glare on the top of the slide. Slide-to-frame fit was tight.
