(GunReports.com) — California State Senator Leland Yee is moving to outlaw the “bullet button,” an AR-15 accessory that enables “fixed” magazines to be removed quickly with the tip of a bullet or other pointed object.
Removable magazines in combination with other features like a pistol grip and telescoping stock are banned under California law. But the bullet button is legal because it doesn’t work with the shooter’s finger, so the magazine is still considered “fixed” and not detachable, CBS-5 TV in Sacramento reports.
Gene Hoffman, president of the pro-gun-rights group Calguns Foundation, created the bullet button as a way to remove an AR’s magazine and clear a jam. Also, a fixed-magazine AR in California is most easily reloaded by opening the lower receiver, so the bullet button device allows the magazine to drop, where it can be reloaded.
