Gun Storage Check Week: June 1-7

1

Gun Storage Check Week is a national campaign of the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF)—the firearms industry trade association—to encourage all gun owners to check their firearm storage practices and, if necessary, take action to Make Sure It’s Secure.

FIREARM STORAGE OPTIONS

Securely storing firearms is one of the most effective methods of helping to reduce suicide, accidents and theft.

Periodically, all gun owners should review their firearm storage practices because people’s lives change—a child grows older and becomes more curious, a teenager or adult happens to be going through a rough patch in life. These and other situations might require a change in storage habits or devices. When circumstances warrant it, temporary offsite storage can be a solution, but remember to follow applicable firearm transfer laws.

As a gun owner, you can choose from multiple options for safely storing and protecting your firearms when they’re not in use. These are just a few of the storage options available to firearms owners. For the greatest level of security, consider using a combination of safety mechanisms and educate family members about the core rules of gun safety and handling firearms properly.

  • Treat every firearm as if it were loaded;
  • Keep your finger off the trigger until ready to fire;
  • Always know your target and what lies beyond it; and
  • Securely store firearms when not in use.

  1. Anybody old enough to watch YouTube knows that the chintzy padlocks on cable locks can be defeated in about 15 seconds by just about anybody. (check out the lock picking lawyer channel). Many of the other storage solutions can just be carried off by the thief and opened up later in their garage with a few simple tools. So keep this in mind when selecting your methods and setting your expectations.
    Even large gun safes can be opened up like tin cans with a carbide blade in a hand held circular saw.
    Do you research (YouTube helps) and develop reasonable scenarios to determine what a storage solution can actually provide for you.
