For apartment/condo home defense, a rifle chambering a classic rifle round, and not a handgun round like those found in a pistol-caliber carbine, is actually one of the trickier choices because of over-penetration — rounds that pass through walls and endanger neighbors. Here’s a practical breakdown:
Why a Rifle Is Challenging in Close Quarters
- Most rifle rounds (5.56, .308, etc.) will punch through multiple drywall layers easily
- Apartments have shared walls, floors, and ceilings with other people
- Rifles are longer and harder to maneuver in tight hallways
If You’re Set on a Rifle — Best Options
- AR-15 in 5.56/223 Remington with Frangible or Hollow Point Ammo. The most popular home-defense platform. Counterintuitively, 5.56 with the right ammo can fragment upon hitting drywall, reducing over-penetration. Short-barreled variants (SBR or pistol-brace configurations) help with maneuverability.
- AR-pistol (pistol-configured AR-15). Same platform, shorter overall length — much easier in tight spaces. No NFA paperwork if configured correctly (no stock, with a brace instead).
- 300 Blackout Subsonic. Designed to be suppressed and effective at close range, and the slower speeds can reduce penetration, depending on bullet construction. Subsonic loads don’t fragment well, though, so penetration is still a concern.

- Layout — Long hallways favor longer guns; small rooms favor pistols

- Storage — How quickly can you access it safely?
