What Rifle Should I Buy for Home Defense in an Apartment or Condo?

0

For apartment/condo home defense, a rifle chambering a classic rifle round, and not a handgun round like those found in a pistol-caliber carbine, is actually one of the trickier choices because of over-penetration — rounds that pass through walls and endanger neighbors. Here’s a practical breakdown:

Why a Rifle Is Challenging in Close Quarters

  • Most rifle rounds (5.56, .308, etc.) will punch through multiple drywall layers easily
  • Apartments have shared walls, floors, and ceilings with other people
  • Rifles are longer and harder to maneuver in tight hallways
Rifle rounds that don’t penetrate a lot are better for shared-wall use, like in apartments or condos.

If You’re Set on a Rifle — Best Options

  • AR-15 in 5.56/223 Remington with Frangible or Hollow Point Ammo. The most popular home-defense platform. Counterintuitively, 5.56 with the right ammo can fragment upon hitting drywall, reducing over-penetration. Short-barreled variants (SBR or pistol-brace configurations) help with maneuverability.
  • AR-pistol (pistol-configured AR-15). Same platform, shorter overall length — much easier in tight spaces. No NFA paperwork if configured correctly (no stock, with a brace instead).
  • 300 Blackout Subsonic. Designed to be suppressed and effective at close range, and the slower speeds can reduce penetration, depending on bullet construction. Subsonic loads don’t fragment well, though, so penetration is still a concern.

Considerations for Apartments and Condo Use

  • Layout — Long hallways favor longer guns; small rooms favor pistols
  • Ammo selection — This matters more than the gun itself for penetration
  • Storage — How quickly can you access it safely?
  • Training — A gun you shoot well beats a “better” gun you don’t

If you’re committed to a rifle-platform round, a braced AR-pistol in 5.56 loaded with frangible hollow points is the most defensible choice for an apartment or condo setting.

When Gun Tests compared 21 loads from eight manufacturers in bullet weights as low as 35 grains to as much as 77 grains, we found several (see table above) that would be more suitable for use in close quarters, where overpenetration would be a logistical and legal worry.
