The 45 Automatic cartridge remains popular with hard-core 45 ACP shooters because it offers a strong combination of terminal ballistics and a modest muzzle signature, with only a few sparks evident out the front in most loads, most of them fired from standard 5-inch barrels common to the full-size pistols. But many modern 45 ACP handguns suitable for carry feature a barrel shorter than the original Government Model 1911’s 5-inch tube — aka Commanders. So we elected to test five loads in a 4.25-inch-barrel handgun, a Springfield TRP Concealed Carry with a lightweight frame.
