Top 10 Full-Size 9mm Luger Handguns

0

Gun Tests shooters have tested dozens of 9mm handguns over the last few years, most often the compact, micro-compact, or pocket pistols because most shooters are interested in the slightly downsized models. But we’ve also tested a lot of full-size guns suitable for carry, competition, and home defense.

Herewith, I’ve compiled the magazine’s Top 10 Full-Size 9mm Handguns in the listicle below, with the primary dimensions being barrels longer than 4.5 inches, overall lengths longer than 7.5 inches, and overall heights taller than 5.5 inches. Those are just general guidelines, however, because there’s not an industry-accepted definition of “full size.” But to paraphrase Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart’s most famous saying, you’ll know a gun is full size when you see it.

We haven’t tested every 9mm Luger-chambered pistol or revolver on the market, of course, so let us know which one is your favorite bigger 9mm.  — Todd Woodard

SMITH & WESSON PERFORMANCE CENTER MODEL 986 10227 9MM LUGER, $1129 (March 2021)

GUN TESTS GRADE: A

Though the full-size-handgun category is usually thought of only for pistols, the 986 wheelgun is an all-business, made-to-perform revolver that offered excellent accuracy with Hornady Critical Duty ammo. Its overall length of 7.5 inches and overall height of 5.9 inches certainly qualify it as a full-size gun. This highly modified L-frame had a smooth DA trigger due to the titanium cylinder. The SA trigger was crisp. We liked the large bold sights and full-size grip, which offered good recoil management. The 986 takes effort to conceal and carry.

Overall Length, 7.5 in.

Barrel Length, 2.5 in., 1:10 in. twist rate

Overall Height, 5.9 in.

Maximum Width, 1.5 in.

Weight Loaded, 35.12 oz.

Capacity, 7

Trigger Pull Weight Double Action, 11.0 lbs.

Trigger Pull Weight Single Action, 4.8 lbs.

In hand, the Smith & Wesson 986 had great balance and a thin grip.

9

SPRINGFIELD ARMORY SA-35 9MM LUGER, $699 (May 2022)

GUN TESTS GRADE: A

If you’re not looking for a collectible, then choose the Springfield Armory SA-35 over a stock Browning Hi-Power. The SA-35 is less expensive, has a better trigger, better sights, and is completely modern.

Overall Length, 7.8 in.

Overall Height, 4.8 in.

Maximum Width, 1.32 in.

Weight Loaded, 2.41 lbs.

Slide Retraction Effort, 17.2 lbs.

Barrel Length, 4.7 in., 1:10 twist

Magazines, (1) Mec-Gar 15 round

Trigger Pull Weight, 4.8 lbs.

When we looked at the list of features on the new SA-35, we saw that Springfield agreed with our ideas regarding how a modern Hi-Power should be fitted out.

8

GLOCK MODEL 47 PA475S204MOS 9MM LUGER, $630 (June 2024)

GUN TESTS GRADE: A

While not earth shattering, the incremental improvements designed into the Glock 47 make an already very good platform even better. If you like your Glock 17 (or your 19 or 45 for that matter), do yourself a favor and take a good look at the Model 47.

Overall Length, 7.9 in.

Overall Height w/o optics, 5.25 in.

Overall Height w/optics, 6.0 in.

Weight Loaded, 2.1 lbs.

Slide Retraction Effort, 16.2 lbs.

Barrel Length, 4.5 in.

7

COLT MFG. CO. GOLD CUP TROPHY O5072XE 9MM LUGER, $1581 (November 2020)

GUN TESTS GRADE: A-

The Gold Cup Trophy is equipped with a nice, wide trigger with an equally nice pull weight. The fiber-optic front sight was good for fast shooting. We liked the magwell and thought the magazine was okay. We would have liked three magazines for the cost.

Overall Length, 8.5 in.

Overall Height, 5.5 in.

Maximum Width, 1.3 in.

Weight Unloaded, 40.0 oz.

Barrel Length, 5.0 in.

Capacity, . 9+1 (single stack)

Slide-Retraction Effort, 12.0 lbs.

Magazines, 1; stainless steel

The Colt uses a dual recoil spring, which helps with recoil.

6

BERETTA/WILSON COMBAT 92G CENTURION 9MM LUGER, $1250 (August 2021)

GUN TESTS GRADE: A

Technically not a full size by barrel length, this pistol is long at 8.1 inches. When comparing the pistols one to the other, the Wilson Combat gun is a top choice for tactical and service use. This is a first-class combat pistol.

Overall Length, 8.1 in.

Overall Height, 5.5 in.

Maximum Width, 1.5 in.

Weight Loaded, 40.7 oz.

Slide Retraction Effort, 16.0 lbs.

Barrel, 4.3 in.

Magazines, Beretta, (2) 17 round, (1) 20 round

Trigger Pull Weight, 5.0 lbs.

The pistol tested is a Centurion version, the slightly shorter Beretta type. We like the looks and balance of the Centurion. The configuration is known as the Beretta 92G. There is no manual safety; the pistol is a decocker only mechanism. There is a firing-pin block like all Beretta 92 handguns. The pistol features a rounded rather than square trigger guard, a distinctive feature.

5

SMITH & WESSON 2023 SPEC M&P9 METAL M2.0 13974 9MM LUGER, $949 (May 2024)

GUN TESTS GRADE: A [BEST BUY]

The Smith & Wesson offers a lot of value with grip inserts, a knife, and four magazines in a large lockable case. You may even remove the compensator if you desire. This is a great-shooting pistol, simply an ace overall for personal and home defense.

Overall Length, 8.5 in.

Overall Height, 5.5 in.

Maximum Width, 1.3 in.

Weight Loaded, 36.1 oz.

Barrel Length, 4.8 in.

Slide Retraction Effort, 18.6 lbs.

Magazines, (2) 17 round, (2) 23 round

Trigger Pull Weight, 5.4 lbs.

Let’s look at M2.0 improvements over older M&P pistols. The current grip is more aggressive, with the balance of adhesion and abrasion more towards abrasion. The Spec is downright raspy but never drew blood. It isn’t as uncomfortable as firing an M&P 10mm. The M2.0 dimensions seem the same, but the M2.0 offers four backstraps versus the first-generation guns with three.

4

SPRINGFIELD ARMORY ECHELON EC9459B-U 9MM LUGER, $650 (June 2024)

GUN TESTS GRADE: A

Rob Leatham, longtime pro shooter for Springfield Armory, said that he would take the blame for the Echelon if things were wrong. We think we need to give him and their engineers credit instead. We found their new pistol to be loaded with good features and a couple of great surprises.

Overall Length, 7.9 in.

Overall Height w/o optic, 5.4 in.

Overall Height w/optic, 6.0 in.

Maximum Width, 1.31 in.

Weight Loaded, 2.2 lbs.

Slide Retraction Effort, 15.0 lbs.

Barrel Length, 4.5 in.

Magazines, (1) 17-round and (1) 20-round

Trigger Pull Weight, 3.7 lbs.

The Echelon shot the Remington and Fiocchi ammo fine, but let us know it didn’t like Armscor’s 124-grain JHPs. Those results dropped Springfield’s Echelon down to a close third place in the accuracy standings.

3

SIG SAUER P320 AXG PRO 320AXGF-9-BXR3-PRO-R2 9MM LUGER, $1200 (March 2022)

GUN TESTS GRADE: A

The pairing of the X-Series flat trigger with the all-metal AGX grip module makes this variant of the P320 an easy-to-shoot pistol. Recoil was smooth and manageable.

Overall Length, 8.1 in.

Overall Height, 5.7 in.

Maximum Width, 1.5 in.

Weight Loaded, 42.7 oz.

The grip angle on the SIG AGX Pro is comfortable and presents a lot like a 1911.

2

1

GUNCRAFTER INDUSTRIES EXECUTIVE CZ 75B 9MM LUGER, $1875 (August 2021)

GUN TESTS GRADE: A

The Guncrafter Executive is among the most eye-catching, attractive, and well-finished pistols we have tested. Moreover, the piece is smooth in operation. The Guncrafter eliminates the drawbacks of a double-action trigger, we feel. The package is available on compact pistols and rail guns as well.

Overall Length, 8.1 in.

Overall Height, 5.4 in.

Maximum Width,1.4 in.

Weight Loaded, 40 oz.

Slide Retraction Effort, 19.0 lbs.

Barrel Length, 4.6 in.

Magazines, (2) 16 round

Trigger Pull Weight, 4.0 lbs.

Our test gun’s frame was stamped with the Guncrafter logo. The case-hardened frame is gorgeous. A nice touch is a shortened and recrowned flush-fitting muzzle. This aids in accuracy potential, according to Guncrafter, and certainly makes the pistol’s looks distinctive. The 4.6-inch barrel developed slightly greater velocity than the Beretta 92 pistol.

HECKLER & KOCH VP9 MATCH OR 81000553 9MM LUGER, $1030 (December 2025-January 2026)

GUN TESTS GRADE: A- (OUR PICK)

The VP9 Match has a good trigger with a short reset, and it cycles smoothly. Accuracy was excellent. The grips are too slick for competition work, but that’s easily resolved.

GLOCK G17L MOS GEN5 9MM LUGER, $550 (December 2025-January 2026)

This was just a long-slide Glock with no real enhancements to make it a target pistol,

other than the longer barrel. The G17L MOS Gen5 did not run on light target loads.

Overall Length, 9.4 in.

Overall Height, 5.4 in.

The Rock Series M1911 A1 FS Tact II was smooth cycling, had a decent trigger, and offered a comfortable grip. Accuracy was very good. The magazine was its Achilles’ heel.

TAURUS 1911 1-191101-9MM 9MM LUGER, $521 (September 2024)

GUN TESTS GRADE: B

The most expensive of this trio, its accuracy was fairly good, even with the heavy trigger pull. Cycling

was smooth. The single magazine was not acceptable, but it wouldn’t be a big loss to discard.

TISAS 1911 DUTY B9 10100530 9MM LUGER, $416 (September 2024)

GUN TESTS GRADE: B

The least expensive pistol, but its fit and finish were good. The trigger was too heavy for precise work, so

accuracy was just okay. Cycling was fairly smooth. The magazine was not its strong suit.

GUN TESTS GRADE: A (OUR PICK)

The SIG P320 RXP won both our accuracy tests and the speed drills — barely. We liked the Romeo 1 Pro that comes mounted on the pistol and the way the OEM dot-sight interface allows both Leupold Delta

Point Pro and Trijicon RMR units.

GLOCK G47 MOS 9MM LUGER, $680 (August 2023)

GUN TESTS GRADE: A-

The Gen5 trigger on the G47 MOS is perhaps the best trigger Glock has designed. Accuracy was good, and the G47 ran without any mishaps. Because this a lightweight pistol, we did notice more muzzle snap, depending on the ammo being used.

Overall Length, 7.9 in.

GUN TESTS GRADE: D

The STR-9 Combat had all the qualities we’d want in a Roland Special build, but it did not perform well,

with numerous FTE jams. When we did get it to run, we liked the heft and balance of the pistol.

BROWNING P35 HI-POWER 9MM LUGER, ~$1000 (May 2022)

GUN TESTS GRADE: B+

We own samples of both pistols, so we would be comfortable using either one for home or self defense.

Of course, if you want a great historical firearm to collect and shoot, then the Hi-Power is your only choice. Also, we wouldn’t mind upgrading a Hi-Power from its base condition to something more useful, but that would be much easier to do with an SA-35.

ROCK ISLAND ARMORY STK100 56625 9MM LUGER, $489 (March 2022)

GUN TESTS GRADE: A- (BEST BUY)

The grip angle on the RIA is similar to a 1911’s, so it feels comfortable in hand. But the rear and front grip

BROWNING HI-POWER 9MM LUGER, $1860 (August 2021)

GUN TESTS GRADE: B

The Hi-Power is a classic 9mm and one that still offers good performance. Overall, however, we are hesitant to recommend a pistol no longer in production. Compared to the more modern pistols, the Hi-Power simply isn’t practical.

CZ-USA CZ 75B URBAN GREY SUPPRESSOR-READY OMEGA 91235 9MM LUGER, $631 (August 2021)

GUN TESTS GRADE: B

The CZ 75B Omega has good features, not the least of which is reliability and good accuracy. The pistol features an ambidextrous safety, an 18-round magazine, good sights, and is suppressor ready. The pistol’s price is attractive. The drawback that rated the pistol down was a heavy double-action trigger not found on the others.

TISAS REGENT BR9 9MM LUGER, $558 (June 2021)

GUN TESTS GRADE: A-

Though we would prefer a good-quality 1911 for most uses, the Hi-Power is a viable defensive firearm. We really like this Tisas rendition. Downside: The cocking effort is severe, which may disqualify it for some shooters.

LONE WOLF DISTRIBUTORS TWF-F LOWER/G34 UPPER 9MM LUGER, $1098 (November 2020)

GUN TESTS GRADE: A

We liked the grip, which made the LWD feel more like a thick 1911. The trigger offered better

consistency and break than the Glock OEM trigger. Accuracy is excellent. Think of this as a custom

gun at production-gun cost.
