Rifle Stats: Howa 24 in. HB HKF92507KH+AB 6.5 Creedmoor, $1000

GUN TESTS GRADE: B+

This package offers many of the benefits of a heavy-caliber hunting rifle with very little of the punishing abuse. The “AB” in the name designates the finish as “Austrian Brown.” The buttpad and stock design combined to produce little recoil.

Howa 24 in. HB HKF92507KH+AB removable box magazine

Howa currently sells the barreled action found in our test gun (sans the Austrian Brown Cerakote finish) for about $525. The roomy Picatinny rail would be extra. Howa’s U.S. importer, Legacy Sports of Reno, Nevada, also sells $100 upgrades to a removable box magazine (right) made to fit just about every popular action.

Howa 24 in. HB HKF92507KH+AB pebble finish

Hogue’s signature pebble finish on the Overmolded stock was evident on our Howa. The Kryptek Highlander camo finish was a good match for the Austrian Brown Cerakote, but did show minor chipping along the scope mount.

Howa 24 in. HB HKF92507KH+AB bolt action

The Howa 1500’s bolt action was smooth and featured short, quick ejection. The two-lug design was simple but offered firm, consistent lockup. The Cerakote treatment on the bolt body was a nice touch, bringing together the exterior camo pattern and action colors.
