This excerpt from the June 1995 issue of Gun Tests shows that Smith & Wesson's 45 ACP M625 worked well enough, but the double-action revolver had drawbacks, which we'd tolerate.

There are two schools of thought in handgun ballistics. One favors medium-caliber high-velocity rounds, like the 357 Magnum or +P 9mm. The other favors large-caliber slow-moving bullets, like the 45 ACP.
