What Gun Should I Buy for Concealed Pocket Carry?

0

Pocket carry is a legit concealment method, especially for compact/subcompact revolvers and small semi-autos. Here’s what matters most:

The pocket holster is non-negotiable. Never carry a gun loose in your pocket. A dedicated pocket holster does two critical things:

  • Covers the trigger guard completely — prevents anything (keys, lint, a finger) from touching the trigger.
  • Breaks up the gun’s outline — most have a rough or textured exterior (like sticky rubber or hook-and-loop) that grips your pants pocket so the holster stays put when you draw, while the smooth interior lets the gun release cleanly.

Popular Holster Options People Like

DeSantis Nemesis — budget-friendly, widely fits many models, sticky exterior.

Sticky Holsters — no clips, relies purely on friction/texture, works in pocket or waistband.

Alien Gear Photon — soft nylon/foam construction, ambidextrous.

Mika’s Pocket Holster — leather/suede, old-school favorite, very slim.

What Guns Work Well for Pocket Carry

Small is essential — pocket carry doesn’t work well for anything bigger than a subcompact:

  • Revolvers: S&W J-frame (Airweight, 642, 340), Ruger LCR — no manual safety to worry about, snag-free hammer options
  • Micro semi-autos: Ruger LCP II, S&W Bodyguard 2.0, Kimber Micro 9, Sig P365 (borderline — great gun, a bit thick for some pockets)

Practical Considerations

Pocket type matters — front pants pockets work best; back pockets print more and are slower to access. Cargo pockets or a dedicated pocket holster in a jacket work too.

Dedicated pocket, dedicated purpose — don’t carry keys, phone, or anything else in that pocket. It should hold the gun and nothing else.

Printing — looser pants (not skinny fit) help conceal the outline. Pleated or roomier front pockets are more forgiving.

Draw speed is slower than other carry methods — practice the draw stroke, and be aware pocket carry is generally considered a backup/secondary method rather than a primary one for people who want fast access.

Check your local laws — carry permit requirements, “printing” laws, and where concealed carry is prohibited vary by state/city.
